In central Alberta we're pretty far from anything that would qualify as an actual beach, and the lakes nearby are all filled with swimmers itch. Yuck. The nicest water around is Pembina river -- cold and moving so it's always clear, but it's still a couple of hours away.
The joy of outdoor pools is: warm water, no swimmers itch, and it's not so far away that you have to make it a full day trip. Both times we've been we only stayed about three hours and it was enough to cool us down, brown us up, and we still got to go out for dinner afterwards. Last time we took our friend Dallas with us and had a blast! I also made a new friend.
Albeit not on purpose.
Afterwards we went to Fomoso and sat on the patio. It was a perfect day.
